Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ARE SOOTHING WICK CANDLES MADE OF?

WAX Composition:

At Soothing Wick, we are rooted in our commitment to offering candles that burn efficiently and release optimal fragrance by using the highest qaulity soy blend wax.

WICK Material:

The type of wick we use varies according to the specific wax and fragrance mix. However, most of our candles employ cotton or paper core wicks.

FRAGRANCE Oils:

At Soothing Wick, we prioritize using the highest quality fragrance oils. While it's a common misconception that candles predominantly use Essential Oils for scenting, it's not always the reality. A specific type of oil is required to ensure a bond between the fragrance and wax molecules.

PHTHALATE-Free Assurance:

We exclusively utilize fragrance oils that are free from phthalates, highlighting our commitment to health and safety standards.

WHAT ARE FRAGRANCE NOTES?

Fragrance notes describe the different stages at which a scent develops and unfolds.

TOP NOTE

The initial scent you first perceive. It gives you a glimpse of the overall fragrance, typically light and fleeting.

MIDDLE NOTE

This is the core of the fragrance. It emerges shortly after the top note and represents the heart of the scent, providing depth and richness.

BASE NOTE

The final stage of the scent's evolution. It's the lasting aroma that remains prominent for the longest time after the initial application, providing a lasting impression.

ARE YOUR WICKS LEAD-FREE?

Absolutely, we have never used and will never use lead in our wicks. Plus, it's been prohibited for quite some time now.

WHAT IS THE BURN TIME FOR SOOTHING WICK CANDLES?

Soothing Wick 9oz candles feature an average burn time of about 50-60 hours.

WHAT SIZE ROOM IS THE CANDLE BEST SUITED FOR?

To enjoy the full fragrance of our 9oz candles, place them in small to medium-sized rooms.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PRESERVE MY CANDLES' COLOR AND APPEARANCE?

Extended exposure to intense lighting or prolonged storage in warm, humid areas can cause candles to discolor or fade. To preserve their vibrant look, avoid placing them in direct sunlight, under fluorescent lights, or in any strong illumination for long durations. It's also worth noting that candle wax tends to soften in temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit. For longer storage, choose a cool and dry spot for your candles.

AFTER BURNING, I NOTICE WAX ON THE CONTAINER SIDES. WHAT'S THE REASON?

This phenomenon, often called "hang-up," is quite common, especially around the top and middle portions of the candle. Though it usually evens out as the candle burns further, a thin film or slight hang-up is typical.

At our end, we prioritize quality. Our candles are crafted using top-tier ingredients, with every component, from the wax and fragrance to the wick, undergoing rigorous testing. While this diligence greatly diminishes the chances of such issues, it's not an absolute guarantee against them.

To achieve the best burn, aim to let your candle burn until the melted wax spans to (or almost to) the edge of the container. Most candles will not burn edge to edge on the first couple of burns. Candles tend to self-correct as they burn down allowing for an even melt pool towards the bottom of the jar.

POST-BURN, MY WICK SHOWS A MUSHROOM-LIKE BUILDUP. WHAT'S THAT ABOUT?

A "mushroom" is essentially a carbon buildup that can occur with various wick and wax combinations. This phenomenon is more prevalent in candles that are rich in fragrance, as the fragrance oil rises up the wick during its burn. This is a typical occurrence, yet it's crucial to snip off this part of the wick before the next use. Allow the candle to cool down and solidify before trimming, to prevent any wick fragments from landing in the wax.

IS WICK TRIMMING NECESSARY?

In most cases, yes, but it can be situational. It's advisable to trim the wick when it appears too long or shows signs of a carbon buildup, often resembling a "mushroom" shape at the tip. For optimal burning, aim to maintain the wick at about 1/4" before lighting your candle. If you notice excessive smoke, soot, or an unusually large flame, it's best to put out the candle, trim the wick, and then re-light.

Neglecting to trim the wick can lead to several issues. Untrimmed wicks can result in excessive flickering, unwanted smoke, and soot. Proper wick maintenance not only ensures a safer burn but can also extend the life of your candle. Additionally, it prevents the wick from curling into the wax, a problem more commonly seen with non-cored wicks.

IS IT USUAL FOR CANDLES TO EMIT SMALL PUFFS OF SMOKE?

This can arise from a few factors. First, ensure your wick is trimmed as previously discussed. Moreover, drafts, whether consistent or occasional, can lead to these smoke puffs. Placing a candle near windows, doors, or vents might make the flame flicker and emit smoke. Also, a candle positioned in high foot traffic areas can experience this. Unless persistent, it's generally not a concern.

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO MINIMIZE SMOKE WHEN PUTTING OUT MY CANDLE?

Directly BLOWING ON THE FLAME isn't recommended as it often produces smoke and can splash melted wax. Instead, utilize tools like a 'Wick Snuffer' for a smokeless extinguishing process. We don’t recommend using the lid to snuff out the flame as this may lead to discoloration of the wax and the smell of smoke in future burns.

WHY IS THERE A RECOMMENDATION TO STOP USING CANDLES WHEN ONLY HALF AN INCH OF WAX IS LEFT AT THE BOTTOM?

It's a precaution for safety reasons. As the wick gets closer to the base, the glass can become extremely hot, leading to potential cracks, breaks, or damage to surfaces beneath. Always ensure candles are placed on heat-resistant surfaces.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO REUSE OR REFILL THE JARS ONCE MY CANDLE IS DONE?

Refilling the jars for burning candles isn't recommended since the glass can weaken over time. However, these jars are perfect for storing a variety of items in your home, from nails to cotton balls. You can also recycle them at most local recycling facilities.
